The State Key Laboratory of Integrated Pest Management was created in March 1991 with from the World Bank and loan the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It officially won the accreditation from the expert committee in October 1993 organized by the State Planning Committee and the approval from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The State Key Laboratory of Integrated Management of Pest Insects & Rodents is one of the primary agricultural pest research centers in China.
The laboratory currently has 18 research professors, 16 research groups and dozens of technical and administrative supporting staff. About 73.8% of our faculties are under age of 45, with 7 being named as Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The laboratory also offers outstanding academic programs for postgraduate students and postdoc fellows. In the past 5 years, the laboratory has trained 23 postdoctoral fellows, 103 PhD and 23 Master students, with another 25 postdoctoral scientists and 102 postgraduate students currently being in the training program. It is the basic policy of the laboratory to encourage its staff to carry out national and international collaborations with other institutions in both research and student training.
The research of the laboratory focus on ecological, physiological, behavior, genomic, evolutionary and applied aspects of agricultural pest insects and rodents of regional importance, including genetic basis of behavior shift, phase changes, host and food selection, population genetic structure and pest migration, ecological adaptation, impact on pest outbreaks of global change, ecological effects of GMO, invasive ecology, insecticide resistance, and sustainable integrated management of pest populations. The laboratory emphasizes strong interdisciplinary crossing-studies, and is dedicated to promote a better theoretical understanding and more effective management of major agricultural pests through integrated approaches, and thus sustainable development of agriculture in China.
In the past five years, the laboratory has secured 304 research projects from various sources, including national research projects such as “Program 973” and “Program 863”, with current total funds of 177.6 million RMB. In the past five years, the laboratory has produced some 535 publications in referred journals, with 416 journal papers in SCI source publications; 22 national invention patents, and 8 new pesticide certificates.
The laboratory enjoys a long-standing and productive collaboration with many agencies, organizations, etc. worldwide including United States of America, Australia, England, France, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, South Korea etc. The laboratory is particularly proud of those collaborations resulted in cooperative research projects, exchange visit of scientists, and co-organizing international conference such as our cooperation with the CSIRO, Australia in wildlife. The laboratory also enjoys numerous collaborations with various domestic institutions: one example is the four field research stations in Dangling Mts. Beijing, Hanna, Yaoyang in Hebei Province and Xilingele in Inner Mongolia.
Operating within the research matrix of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with particular consideration to major pest problems facing China, the laboratory are actively promoting inter and multi-disciplinary interaction and team approach to IPM research, training and extension. Contribute to the advancement of integrated pest management theory and practice. Produce high quality publications in highly regarded SCI journals. Further promote international cooperation.
